How Do I Make Anime Style Backgrounds?

Post by EHEBrandon »

Okay so I was looking at PARKERS gallery and some blew me away!!! When I say anime I mean like the Japanese anime style... Where the backgrounds are very detailed... I know how to do perspectives I know how to draw... But my problem is... How do I get it detailed like he does? Like it is outstanding and I want my visuals to be like that... He even said he only used Anime Studio... He didn't use a outside program... I understand it may deal with brushes... But I need like a example or a step by step tutorial.... Can anyone please tell me? Here are some of his examples so you know what I'm trying to achieve:

Like what would I need to do to create backgrounds like this in Anime Studio? I have Anime Studio Pro 10.1 and I really want to make a Japanese styled anime... I already have the characters made and ready for animation but stuck on backgrounds... I don't want to use outside programs either... I am very comfortable with Anime Studio drawing tools... So if anyone could make a tutorial or go into great detail (basically a tutorial :p) or post a example file to something with this amount of detail as a background that would be great....

To develop any skill set you need to practice, practice and practice.
Is like if you were asking how to draw? or how to dance? or how to be good at a sport?

I know that... But the thing is he didn't use Photoshop to make these... He actually used Anime Studio.. I am wondering how I could achieve this with anime studio.

the "misty" (darkening) effects could be achieved by using a "multiply" blend layer with soft edge fills over the base drawing.

looking at the bricks, I'd guess that there are "a few" different bricks made from a base shape with slightly different colours and paths and then overlaid with a blend layer; then those "few" replicated a few times each (+/- flip H and flip V) and the copies placed on a black background; and then the wall overlaid with another blend layer ...

the moon halo and reflection on the ground might be just soft edge "white" fills, or they might be "screen" blend (or gaps in a multiply overlay?)

I did a piece on blend modes a couple of years back - here's the PDF: http://www.mediafire.com/download/3clwbyv58c8epfg

and here's one example of custom brushes / blend modes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpC0X2V ... S5uZ7sLiGw

hope that helps to get you started.

There's tons of tutorials online dealing with these "how do I do this". While there may be few adressing AS directly, you can watch those about Illustrator and apply most of that workflow to AS.

In general you have a better chance to achieve what you want when your question already is "How do I do this in AS", instead of "how do I draw this in general". Do the same thing on paper or in a program you're familiar with, then transfer the workflow to AS. Much easier.

Don't forget the general Caveat: do the BG, don't do a specific program.

I had been trying to find a way to say something about this. It's really hard to get the words right.

When I look at the backgrounds being discussed that inspire you, I see that yes, they look really good, but...

... there really isn't anything complicated used. It's all basic Anime Studio features. Fill shapes, soft edges, strokes, brushes etc. Nothing overly complicated. Just overlapping shapes... various levels of opacity and some blurring or soft edge effects... tapered and variable line widths. Nothing really complex.

Tutorials for all of the specific Anime Studio techniques used in those backgrounds would be very basic stuff that's been done before.

Anyone can use Anime Studio and draw overlapping shapes of different colors and values, apply different fill effects and strokes. I think what you are inspired by, is the artists skill. It's creating those shapes in a specific way that looks awesome, it's combining all those techniques for a final result that requires an artists eye to achieve.

A tutorial describing the techniques used in those backgrounds won't be able to teach you where to put highlights and shading or where to draw extra simple shapes for a "grunge" effect or wood grain.

Hmmm I may need to try everything stated above with soft edges and blends to see what I get..... But if anyone has any input or a certain method please post... Also could someone link to me to some tutorials they were mentioning above with illustrator or AS? So I could take a look at them? Many thanks. :) Hope to see more replies on this topic though. ^.^;
