Smartbones are misbehaving

So, here's the scenario:
I'm animating the opening sequence of a music video, and the character is talking. So I animate the mouth, and it looks fine. I then decided that I wanted him to glance off-screen during a break. So I set up all the eye movements, making sure to set up a frame before the eyes move so that they don't move until needed. Not only do they crawl until that frame, but when I tried to fix it, by putting the starting frame for the eyes every 24 frames, it messes with the mouth. Is my only solace to re-animate it, and move the eyes and mouth in tandem?
