I just tried it with AS7.1 Pro and animated layers are working just fine for me. Are you putting the layers in a grp. layer and checking the enable animated layer box in the depth sort tab?

I have also got one layer here which is changing layer order,
BUT, there are no keys and no channel.
This means I can't move or delete the keys.
Also I can't replicate what caused the change so I don't know why it worked (unintentionally in fact---- I don't need that layer to move)

I don't see why they need to be in the same group to change layer order it's a PITA and it alters my rendering to psd for after effects adjustments.
Once items are in the same layer the they are rendered ans on layer.

Actually now I've said that I can in fact see why, it's still a pain in the Tijuana Brass.

The key frames will be on the grp layer just like switch layers would be.

Thanks, for all the replies,
You know there's nothing in the manual at all about animating layer order.

Tutorial 5.4 touches on depth for 2 pages and its not very in depth (pun intended) :D :D :D

I looked and I can not find anything on animated layer in the manual either. I think someone posted something on how to do it along time ago is how I remembered .

Its confusing at 1st but ungrouped layers can be sorted by Z when you have selected sort my depth from the project settings under file. But if you wish to not use Z you can use the layers in a grp and set the grp to animated layer setting.

Yeah sort by depth is a different issue entirely.

OK...reported this to SM. I cannot get the animated layer ordering to work on WIN 7 either. Funny...I had the same thing as you happen....a couple times I managed to get a few keyframes to appear on the timeline but they meant diddly squat to the layer order.

As soon as I enable animated layer box in the depth sort tab it worked. I had forgotten about that checkbox as I am on AS 5.6 most of the time these days.

I'm not trying to insult your intelligence however, this is what worked for me...

Create group layer
On the group layer, double click to open Layer Settings > Depth Sort tab > Enable animated layer order
Create two vector layers under the group
Create a circle on each vector layer
Start scrubbing the timeline, and move the two layers around in the group.

NOTE:
The keyframes are not on the individual layers, they are located on the group layer.
I did not check the "Sort layers by depth" in the group settings or the project settings.
I am using AS 6.2

Insult away , you won't affect my intelligence in any way.
Thanks for your answers everyone, it was a grouping issue.

Unfortunately grouping is a problem when export to psd for rework in after effects.
I used another method other than layer ordering anyway.

I don't think anyone's mentioned this, but animated layer ordering doesn't work if the group or bone layer is nested within in a switch layer.
