any basic tutorials on walk cycles?

Post by Mr. Ping Pong »

Hi friends,

I've gone through most of the tutorials, and most of Fiziwig's tutorial, but I've not yet come across a tutorial that I'm able to use to learn a basic walk cycle. Fiziwig's work is very helpful, but the basic walk is missing a few too many links for me to grasp it. Is there any tuorial like I'm looking for?

THANKS!
Glenn

IMHO your best bet is to pick up nearly any animation book -- most of them cover walk cycles and knowing the basic animation principles behind them you can apply in AS.

The Animator's Survival Kit by Richard Williams is a book no animator should be without, so that's the one I'd recommend.

After you understand what is involved actually doing it in AS is pretty straightforward, particularly if you use bones (I like creating actions for walk cycles).

Hmmm, a simple web search revealed this as well:

Once again, the idea is to understand the principles behind a walk cycle. I'd still get the Williams book, though.

Cribble has created the Resources section.
There are a couple examples of walkcycles. however, I recommend the Animator's survival kit too.

Here's my 1st walk cycle! very basic, but I did throw in some bone dynamics to get a little jiggle going.

I also second the recommendation of the Williams book - but also look at the sheets based on the work of Preston Blair.
Use this URL and look at the bottom of the page for links to idea sheets.

I used one of the illustrated walk cycles as the basis for a very quick and crude demo for users of another program:

And again, in a different way in another demo:

Once, I saw myself in a mirror.
Or did I?
