Personally, I generally regard a full body movement straight towards or away from the camera as a situation to be avoided in 2D animation. Across the screen, or possibly at an angle partly across the screen and partly towards the viewer, perhaps with some scaling, is easier and generally looks better.
Think game sprites.
There are a couple of simple possibilities I can think of, from my limited experience - you can just have simple swinging arms, as in http://www.yesalbum.com/v001/mylesg/walk_towards_1.swf
Alternatively, you can play tricks with visibility to swing behind the body, as in http://www.yesalbum.com/v001/mylesg/walk_towards_2.swf
Scale the character as they walk towards the camera for added effect.
If you want to put more effort into it you can also add scaling of the hands/arms, colour changes, switch layers to change the appearance of the hands at different angles, etc.
Is this what you were after, or something more sophisticated?
Some of our more experienced/professional contributors may have something better to recommend.
Regards, Myles.
