Free transform tool

Post by foundmarble » Thu Jun 11, 2009 5:39 pm

In PS (I believe, Flash also), you can scale, rotate or translate a selection with 1 tool.
Is this possible in AS? If so, I am wondering the cons against this.

One con I can see is the animation side of it. Having separate tools would separate the key frames which would be needed.

I was thinking the combined tool should ONLY be for used in the initial drawing on frame 0. The other 3 tools would then be used for animating, thus separating the key frames to scale, translate, rotate.

Peace,

Are you talking about bones and layers? Points don't have separate key frames for scale, rotate etc. All points have are translation.

I could see a combined point tool as being useful. Not so much for layers and bones. Not sure why. I guess I am so use to keeping those things separate in my head I like having different tools for translation and rotation.

A combined POINT tool would be able to work on any frame without causing trouble.

Put animating aside for a second.....(funny, since this is an animation program, but go with me on this wierd journey)

If I could manipulate just the points (no layer or bone manipulation) in order to get the desired shape(s) with one tool on frame 0 this would save a lot of my time on creation. If you need a reference, open Photoshop and use the free transform tool.

Now put animation back on the table...
I would then use the existing tools (separate- but equal  ) to manipulate the points. Come to think of it, I could use this "universal tool" since points do not have separate keyframes for scale, translate and rotate.
Once you use a tool like the free transform tool (in PS) you will see the benefit (without having to drink the koolaid) :P . Truly a time saver.

Selgin, I'll look at the thread.

Thanks guys for the quick response. I'll tell the boss you need a raise.

Here is an image to explain.
Hopefully, I am not insulting your intelligence. I am doing this to put an image to my verbal description.
Image

When you touch the handles on bounding box you would receive the scale tool (#1)
When you are in the vicinity of the corners, you would receive the rotate (#2)
When you are inside the box, you translate the selected object (#3)

Heck...you could even put a shear attribute with the tool also.

Again this is all about points, not bones or layers. However, I can see a use for a universal tool for layers also. But, that could be a discussion for another day

Wow, Sometimes I really am an idiot.

Sorry, I didn't even realize you can hold down alt to rotate points while using the scale tool and the opposite is true while using the rotate tool.

Disregard this post.....sorry.

Damn, and I went to the trouble of making that image. curses! curses!

I think so too. I might have a go with my limited scripting skills...
