Tutorial 1.3 - sketchy line effect

Hi,

I'm having problems with tutorial 1.3;

"Now the highlighting looks correct, so press the spacebar to activate this fill. We'll just stick with the default fill color of white and outline color of black, so there's no need to modify the colors. However, we will add a line effect to make the cloud a bit softer. In the Style window, select 'Sketchy' from the Line Effect pop-up menu. Now would be a good time to select the File->Render command to see what your final result looks like:"

Everything works fine, except I can't get the sketchy element to work all the time. Do I need to re-select the shape with the Create Shape tool? Do I need to press space to activate the fill? Is it the radius of the sketchy effect ( 1-8 )?

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt.

Its infuriating. Please help!
