Fantastic to see the brushes while drawing!
When experimenting with brushes I found that when using a tablet, changin the line width has no affect on it when drawing, unless I do rapid jots on the same spot! Then occasionally it will make a jot with the right width. Drawing with the mouse however does not have this problem.

What you're experiencing is not a bug, but a feature.
When using a tablet, the freehand tool uses the pen pressure to control the line width, and ignores the line width setting.
When the freehand tool is active, you can bring up the Freehand Options popup (just below the menubar) and disable pen pressure. Then, the freehand tool will use the line width setting and not the pen's pressure.
