use the layer translate tool, but dont do it manually. use the box with co-ordinate and move in incremental values. ie increase the number by 5 for each movement. combine this with the timeline and space your keyframes in incremental values, ie every 20 frames. these two together should give a smoot...

try building at least three versions of your character. side-view, 3/4 view and front view. this will help as practice. use switch layers with ...for eg. lots of hand positions fists, open, peace sign. do the the same for head positions. it can be used for emotions also. angry eyes, angry eyebrows.....
