"Lumage" - a forgotten technique?

http://wardomatic.blogspot.com/2007/09/ ... orgot.html

No clips there, but a very interesting description, and I like and the style in the screenshots. Some fodder for anyone interested in a really different style, I think.

Walk cycles are an important part of my recent job. Finally I found a reasonably fast workflow for doing them, no matter from which side the character is seen. I'll sketch it here, in shorthand, assuming you're all familiar with AS. 1. Put your character into a group layer. 2. Create a line on the g...

Hm. Why try to go 3D if you already know that you can't compete with Pixar? Besides the point that I'm personally not really interested in any talking car movie: why not make it decidedly different? Have a good story, then animate it with model cars and stop-motion. You could attach different mouths...

Chalk writing traditionally is made the other way round: one starts with the complete writing on one layer, then puts another on top of it and erases it drame by frame so teh writing look like it writs itself. This way your chalk could even be a bitmap, which of course reduces jittering drastically ...

HDTV isn't a problem. What I'm working on right now is (medium) HDTV, 720 x 1280. I've already done 1280 x 1920 (full HDTV), and AS performs as usual. You only need adequate hardware for this, and you have to decide for a format long before production because every bitmap element has to be created f...

This doesn't work... I tried it. OK, thanx for testing. I still don't understand why one would create stuff in AI and not export it as vector? From my own experience with AI, I'd rather create the artwork in AS now. Maybe the templates could be done in AI if the artist feels more comfortable with i...

There's an even more complicated solution here ... Think of a 3 min sound file. Duplicate it. Now go into the first copy and replace the last 2 min with silence. Go into the 2nd file and replace the first and the last minute with silence. In the 3rd file ... well, you got the idea. Now you have 3 fi...

In this special case where the final position of elements is known I could think of another solution: Create your element, and export it in at least double size than you finally need. In Photoshop, select the flat colour with the Wand tool with a setting of zero tolerance (he he) and no feathering. ...

You animate them by hand. The more drawings, the smoother the movement will be. You could either pre-fabricate the phases of a head turn and put them into a switch layer, or you could do a frame-by-frame point aninmation, or you spend some time to build a rig as described elsewhere which could do a ...

No, there isn't. I'm trying to think of a solution: 1. .dat files are plain text, so you could theoretically copy&paste everything together. BUT then the frame numbers will not be correct. It would be unnecessary much work to correct them by hand. 2. You could duplicate the mouth switch layer fo...

Sorry for the late answer: I'm buried in my own AS project (my own? Ha!)...

Another way to move the sun could be to let it jump like a ball/frog. Think of "ball with a will". This way it would be mobile, but without that dreaded "on rails" look.

Some codecs drastically reduce the colour resolution. That's why the result appears flat and a bit gray.

Sörensen isn't a codec for production, it's best for distributed files. During production, when files go into different programs, by any means use a lossless codec.
