3/4 view walk cycle
Below is a link to my first 3/4 view walk cycle http://www.fhqhosting.com/ui/3quarterwalk1.swf Considering that a 3/4 view seems to be very common for most TV animation, it's surprisingly difficult to find any tutorials or advice online on how to animate one. I'm aware that he moves as if he has a s...

The one that immediately springs to mind is Blender It's the one I use and it supports alpha channel, chromakey and other effects by using plugins. It's more famous for being a 3D modeller but it also has a VSE or Video Sequence Editor. Also, because it's a well established piece of software, there ...

Apart from the cost (free), an advantage of all the additional software I used is that it's cross-platform. So once you learn how to use Blender, Gimp, Wings3D and Audacity you can use them on a Mac, Windows PC or Linux. As for commercial software being better than open source alternatives, bear in ...

First 'proper' animation
This is my first animation that is more than just a 60 second test. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ixuk58FeuR0 I wanted to create a few re-usable character rigs so that I can put together a story in a limited animation style. It's mostly 'talking heads' I'm afraid but I learnt a lot by putting toget...

Okay, I slightly improved the legs. http://blighty.50webs.com/flash/NewWalk.swf I'm just curious how other people create reusable walk cycles. Currently I'm creating 4 actions (2 contact positions and 2 passing positions), inserting copies of them into the timeline and then going in and adjusting th...

Yeah, the proportions are a little off. Originally he was more 'anatomically correct' but ended up looking too bland. Like Fred from Scooby-Doo. I increased the size of his head, which works better for close up shots, and feet, to make him seem like he had some weight. I obviously missed the legs, a...

Ah, the hips aren't moving. Damn, I really did need a fresh pair of eyes on this. This is the character with a vertical movement http://blighty.50webs.com/flash/johnwalk2.swf I prefer how he moves already. I added a floor whilst creating my keyframes but the rear leg is slightly higher than the fron...

First walk cycle
I'm trying to animate a walk cycle using The Animators Survival Kit as a guide.
This is the first one I've attempted where the character doesn't look like they have polio or rickets. I'd appreciate any criticism or advice to improve on it though.

Thanks for those commands, I'll add them to my arsenal. I usually skip that step though and import the image sequence directly, a program called seven-gnomes reads the PNG image sequence and then creates a text file that lets Cinelerra read in the images without needing to convert them first. So far...

Linux toolchain
Hey, I just wanted to ask the Linux users on this forum what programs they use with Anime Studio to create a finished animation. I've been using Linux as my main OS for about 6 years now but always kept a Windows partition to use Particle Illusion and a decent video editor. Lately I've decided to do...

That's great, I wasn't exactly sure what effect Sort By True Distance had on layer order. I was just going by the Head Turn tutorial. If in the actions you define 0.0001 for the Left eye to be above the face layer (what still at 0.000) then you should define the opposite action to -0.0001 and not to...

Issues with depth sorting
Hi all, I've been following Darth Furby's head turn tutorial and I'm running into some problems with depth sorting. I'm trying to change the Z-depth of an eye to conceal it as the the head changes to a side view, instead I find that other vector layers are popping in and out of visibilty. I've searc...
