I had that problem long ago, I cant remember what I did to fix it but I do remember long painful hours before the problem was fixed.

I used to take pictures of trees then trace them in AS later on. I would import the image file and have it over my vector layer, but I have the vector layer selected. I'm guessing it works the same way as mkelley's technique.

Whoa, lets not argue about advice now. I agree with Slowtiger on this one though, any program will suffice. Heck here is what I did with paint, it took me like 45 minutes.
