Either way you approach you`ll have to deal with the shoulder joints. Even for walking and especially for running, a shoulder would move and if you have a solution for that movement - the same would go for any other.

I can`t speak for slowtiger, but I`m pretty sure he was not talking about the traditional look. To me, it looks like someone else did the tracing of your sketches. As well with combining blob brush with the freehand tool, which has the options for trimming edges.
