you can do this without a script...

create your new action. with the action's timeline active, select 'mainline' in the action window, and hit the 'copy' button. Done!

don't trust the editing view.

dynamic bones always seem to be going crazy when you're editing... but this is not necessarily the way they'll behave when rendered.

render a preview to see how they REALLY move...

so i'm recording lots of actions at the moment, and many of them involve switching the visibility of certain layers on and off. at first i thought i was going crazy, but now i've confirmed that it's not all in my head - i've recorded keyframes within the actions to turn off layer visibility, and yet...
