I haven't done a whole lot with z-positions, as of yet, but as I understand, the trick is to use very, very small z changes. So, instead of changing the z level to 1, you'd use something more like, 0.01. With the translate tool selected, you should be able to see the the x, y, and z values at the to...

GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/) is a good, free image editor. And I believe PNG seems to be the preferred format for importing non-vector images.

Unfortunately, I only experimented with Free DV very shortly and some time back. I never ran into the problem you describe, but it sounds like maybe some sort of incompatibility issue between Avid and your sound card.
