Re: identifying bones in the timeline

99% of the time, you only need to pay attention to the top white row channels and the red row channels immediately below. The top white rows shows you the keyframes for all the bones in the Bone layer. This is mainly useful for making global timing adjustments to that bone layer. (For example, to sp...

Re: Smart Actions (turns) point animation vs. layer transformation

I mostly use bone and point motion in my smart actions. Point motion just gives so much more control that layer transforms. It allows noses, eyes, mouths, etc. to change both perspective and shape. Probably overkill for a very cartoony style. Not at all. Almost everything I do is cartoony and I use...

Re: Smart Actions (turns) point animation vs. layer transformation

I use a lot of different techniques but there are certain practices I follow for most character rigs. For face elements in a head turn, I parent everything to a Face bone, and use this to move the face parts across the head. I also have child bones for moving both eyes together, each eye individuall...

Re: Cartoon Animator 4 (CT4)

I have used Cartoon Animator 4 in a few job projects for explainer videos, and for that purpose it's great, but as soon as you want to do anything custom it gets complicated and Moho really shines in that area. That's kinda how I felt after working with CA4 Pipeline for a couple of months. I still ...

Re: Best pose for rigging?

For production rigs, I may include a few demo poses in the first few frames to suggest the rig's posing possibilities, maybe even include them as Morph Actions. (But I don't think anyone actually uses these, so I don't bother anymore.) If it's a really complicated rig, I might create a short animati...

Re: Best pose for rigging?

Also if I'm making a sample rig for Moho ( for example) I want it to look good when it's loaded in so I'll rig to that pose, to please the eye of a new user. I prefer to put the demo pose in frame 1. To me, frame zero should be as neutral as possible to allow for more posing possibilities in later ...

Re: Best pose for rigging?

I actually go with a 3/4 view. It's the most useful view. Front on should really be used sparing and with good reason, in many situations a character may not even need it. I guess it depends on how much and often the character swings from 3qtr to 3qtr view. (See any of the King Julien, Boss Baby, o...

Re: moho photoshop files, export shows "X" on each layer

Personally, I don't bother with the layered PSD route. Instead, I use this free script for Photoshop called Photoshop-Export-Layers-to-Files-Fast to output separate PNG files of the layers. This script is able to output all visible layers from a Photoshop document, trimmed or untrimmed, and it's abl...

Re: Best pose for rigging?

BTW, when I'm asked to create a full rig for a character at work, I usually make a front view that does a smooth 3qtr turn in either direction, and then the rig snaps to a separate 'side view' artwork for the profile. This is because it's easier to have a separate rig for the face in this angle, esp...

Re: Best pose for rigging?

Only rig for what you need, and don't be afraid to do one-off rigs for any special cases, like a sitting rig. This is good advice. Building a full 'all purpose' rig can be time-consuming, and for some projects it may be easier and quicker to make shot-specific 'one-off' rigs. A lot of times, I wind...

Re: Best pose for rigging?

It depends on how you intend to use the rig in your production. I'll assume you want to build a general-purpose rig to re-use for many situations, so I'll focus on that. If your intention is to create a turning character, start with the front pose. This will give you the same starting point regardle...

Re: Moho Plans

Part of the problem for me is that the program keeps these properties hidden from the user, and that can make fixing ID-related problems more difficult when they occur. Obviously, this is more severe in Moho 13.0 (broken Smart Bone Actions, odd behavior in the Actions window,) but it's been an issue...

Re: Moho Plans

am I the only person on this forum that prefers version 13? I have yet to encounter any debilitating bugs / crashes, and 13 has always seemed much faster than 12.5 when working on the same file. anyhow, I'm also looking forward to version 13.5 and beyond! The biggest issue with Moho 13.0 is the ina...

Re: Moho Plans

I agree. It's important that Moho 13 users, especially Big Sur users who can't even run it right now, get a functional and reliable version of 13. A working Moho 13.5 also means Lost Marble will have revenue coming in as they develop Moho 14. Even though the feature set for Moho 14 has not been anno...
