That is intentional. Separate Dimensions allows you to keyframe on one axis while not on another. Adding a main channel keyframe would once again join both axes together on a frame, which would mess up the separate axis animation. Thank you for the responses! Having two rigs does seem like a very intelligent idea. I'll probably just end up doing a layer visibility switch since the smart bones are giving me trouble.
